Chapter 22: Rule Three
Hayes took my hand in front of his whole board.
"Meeting's over," he said to the table. "Mama, you've got the chair."
"I've always had the chair," his mother said.
He walked me out of that office and down past the bottling line, and every worker on it turned to watch.
He didn't let go of my hand all the way up the hill.
His bedroom was the same as the night of the barrel house.
The lamp was on by the bed, and the window looked over the pastures toward my farm.
Only the guest room door across the hall was standing open now, with the bed stripped.
He shut his own door behind us and turned the lock.
Then he just stood there and looked at me.
I was in my barn coat and jeans, with hay in my hair and my mother's pearls at my throat.
"You're a mess, darlin'," he said.
"I know."
He came to me and started picking the hay out of my braid, one piece at a time.
He was so careful about it.
He did it like it was the only job he had all day.
I stood still and let him, and my eyes filled up, and I didn't even know why.
"Rule three," I said.
His hands stopped in my hair.
"It ended at noon, Hayes," I said. "You said so yourself. So what's this?"
He smiled, slow, the first real smile I'd seen on him since September.
"This is the part after," he said.
He kissed me.
It was soft.
It was so soft that I had to hold on to his suit jacket to stay standing.
He slid my barn coat off my shoulders, and it fell on the floor.
He unbuttoned my flannel shirt one button at a time, kissing my mouth between each one.
