Chapter 23: The Supper

I held my hand up in the morning light and turned the ring so the old diamond caught it.

"Every day?" I said.

"Every day," Hayes said. "It wore a hole in my good shirt."

"You could have given it back to me in the spring house."

"You'd have thrown it in the creek," he said. "I've seen your arm, darlin'."

I laughed, and then I put my hand flat on his chest and left it there.

"When?" I said.

He thought about it.

"I told a hundred and fifty people I was going to ask you at Christmas," he said. "I'd hate to be a liar twice."

"Then December," I said. "On my mother's lawn."

"On your lawn," he said.

We were married on the nineteenth of December, on the front lawn at Ashcraft, under my mother's barn lights.

Dot and the barn crew strung them in the oak trees the day before, swearing the whole time.

It was cold enough to see your breath.

There were patio heaters between the long tables.

My mother's quilts hung on the backs of the chairs, the ones Dot had bought back at Kaylee's sale.
