Chapter 19: The Sacristy

The Rusconi family took up three whole pews at ten o'clock Mass.

My father sat in the aisle in a wheelchair with a blanket over his knees, and my uncle stood behind him with one hand on the handle.

The capos filled the row behind them, with their wives in black lace.

The widow of the dead capo sat at the end, very straight, with her rosary wound around her fist.

Paolo's place by the pillar was empty.

I noticed and I didn't let myself think about it.

I had a different problem.

Teo sat on my left in his dark suit, with a hymnal open on his knee and his thigh pressed against mine.

The priest began the homily.

I put my hand on Teo's leg, under the hymnal, where nobody could see.

He didn't turn his head.

His whole body went stiff.

I slid my palm slowly up the inside of his thigh, and leaned toward his ear.

"Before this Mass is over," I breathed, "I'm going to take you somewhere with a door."

"Allegra."

"I'm going to get on your lap and take your cock inside me, and ride you until you forget your own name."

His fingers whitened on the hymnal.

"And you're going to hold very still," I said, "because the whole family will be thirty feet away."

A muscle jumped in his jaw.

I felt him through his trousers, hard against my hand.

I patted him once, gently, like a girl comforting a dog.

"Behave," I said out loud, and folded my hands in my lap.
