Chapter 14: The Note on the Door

"Smile," Victoria said, and her voice was sweet as syrup.

Rafe took one step toward her.

I caught his sleeve.

"Don't," I said. "That's exactly what she wants on the video."

He stopped.

His jaw worked, and he stayed where he was, with his hands open at his sides and the whole lobby watching him.

Victoria lowered the phone slowly.

"I only wanted a memory of the day," she said, loud enough for the doorman. "You two look so happy."

Kent's mother came out of the terrace, saw us, and put an arm around Victoria.

"Come away from them, dear," she said. "That man is not allowed within a hundred feet of you."

"He's thirty feet from her, and she walked up to him," I said.

Nobody answered that.

They went back inside, and the glass doors swung shut on the pink dress.

In the truck, Rafe sat with both hands on the wheel and didn't start the engine.

"She got me coming at her," he said.

"You took one step."

"That's all it takes. It took one step the last time, too."

"Last time was three years ago."

"It was a Tuesday," he said. "I'd driven four hours to the school she was transferring to, to hand her a birthday card. They gave me sixty days for it."

I didn't say anything.

I took his hand off the wheel and held it in both of mine until his fingers loosened.

"She's going to do something else," I said. "She has the clip, and she'll post it by tonight, and it won't be enough."

"How do you know?"

"Because she wasn't smiling when she lowered the phone."

I called Ross from the passenger seat.

He picked up on the first ring.
