Chapter 15: Dad Chose You

"Ross," Victoria said, and her whole face rearranged itself.

The eyes widened, and the lip came forward, and the hand with the phone dropped to her chest.

"Oh, thank God. He's been here, Ross, look at what he did to her door."

Ross didn't look at the door.

"Don't," he said.

"I was coming to check on June. I heard the glass, and I."

"You're wearing gloves."

She glanced down.

She was.

Thin black ones, the kind you buy in a pack at the hardware store.

"Ross, you need to call the police."

"June," he said, without turning his head. "Go back in the stairwell. Please. She'll only say it if you aren't here."

I stepped back and pulled the door to within an inch of the frame.

I could still hear every word.

Ross took his phone out of his shirt pocket and touched the screen.

He held it down at his side, with the little red dot toward her.

"Say it to me," he said. "Not to a camera. To me."

"Say what?"

"What you wrote on that note. What you did to the glass. What you did on Saturday in the lot."

Victoria looked at him for a long second.

Then she laughed, and I did not know the sound.

It was low, and dry, and perfectly calm.

"You want me to say it?" she said. "Fine. I'll say it. You never listened to me anyway."

"Vic."

"Don't call me that. He calls me that."

She pulled the hood off her head.

Her hair came loose, and under the yellow bulb she looked exactly her age.

"Dad found out in October," she said. "About the money. It was nothing at first. A few thousand for the condo, a few thousand for the car. He sat me down at the kitchen table and said he was disappointed in me."

"You stole from him?"

"I took what I was owed for twelve years of being polite."

"He was good to you."

"He was good to June."

Her voice cracked on the name and snapped back flat.
