Chapter 13: Marrow's Diner

I answered Daphne at six in the morning: Noon. Marrow's Diner. Alone.

She wrote back a heart.

Ezra was standing at the window when I came out of the guest room dressed.

He did not ask where I was going.

"Two of my men will be across the street," he said. "You won't see them."

"I'm having lunch with my best friend."

"I know," he said. "Take the car."

I took the car.

Marrow's was a narrow diner on Fifth with red booths, where Daphne and I had split fries every Friday of senior year.

She was already in our booth, in a yellow cardigan, with her hands folded around a cup of tea.

She stood up and hugged me for a long time.

"I was so scared," she said into my hair. "The news said Ezra Maddox took the chair. And then you weren't home, and I thought, oh God, what if he did something to you."

"He didn't."

"Thank God."

We sat.

She slid her phone across the table with the photograph on the screen.

It was me at the Carrow Grand in the torn blouse, with my hair down and my mouth swollen.

"I took this by accident," Daphne said. "I was there to see you before the party. Sadie, who was he?"

"Someone."

"Someone Gerald's family doesn't know about." She spoke gently. "If this gets to Gerald, the wedding is off. Your father will lose everything. They'll say you're ruined."

"Is that what you want?"

Her eyes filled right on schedule.

"I want you safe. I want you to let me help." She touched my wrist. "Here's what I think. You step back from the engagement. Quietly. You say you aren't ready. And I'll be there for Colby, because someone has to keep him from falling apart, and I would never let anyone see this photo."
