Chapter 15: When She Says

Sadie's POV

I called my father back from the car, and I put it on speaker so the driver could hear.

"Where have you been?" Martin said. His voice was thin. "I have been calling you for an hour."

"You have a picture of me."

"I did." He coughed. "I deleted it. I wanted you to know that. I deleted it, Sadie, and I'm not going to show it to anyone."

I stared at the phone.

"Why?"

"Your Mr. Maddox came to the house," my father said. "He sat in my chair. He told me what to keep in a drawer."

He hung up before I could answer.

Ezra sat beside me in the back seat with a tablet on his knee, reading, and he did not look up.

"You went to see my father," I said.

"Yes."

"Without telling me."

"Yes."

"We have terms."

"Your terms say I do not touch you unless you say." He turned off the screen. "They do not say I cannot take a photograph out of your father's hand."

It was a good answer, and I was annoyed that it was.

"What else did my father say?"

"That he is sorry."

"Is that all?"

He looked at me for a moment too long.

"That is all I will say in a moving car," he said.

He was looking out the window, not at me, and there was a tightness along his jaw that I had not seen before.

I told myself he was tired.

The car turned in at the Maddox house.

The wedding was in nine days, and the house had already gone mad with it.

Florists carried lilies up the front steps, and a man on a ladder hung white silk across the porch.

The fitting was in the east morning room, where a dressmaker waited with a mouthful of pins and a dress that was not my first dress.
