Chapter 17: Section Nine

I did not speak in the elevator.

I did not speak in the apartment either, until he had shut the door and I had put my back against it.

"What did I sign?" I said.

Ezra stood in the middle of the bare room with his hands open at his sides.

"Two years ago, at your kitchen table. Colby brought you a paper and a pen."

I remembered it.

I remembered Colby's practiced smile, and the stack of pages he had said were for the lease on a house we would never live in.

"I signed every page without reading it," I said. "I trusted him."

"Yes."

"Because you let me think the whole mess was a contract about a husband."

"It is."

"It's also a contract about my mother's formulas."

"I learned it this morning," he said. "From your father. I was going to tell you tonight."

"Were you?"

"Yes."

I wanted to believe him so badly that it made me stupid.

I thought of Gerald's wet smile.

I thought of a man who had read my file on a plane and sat in a bar until I came to him, and who had owned the paper that owned me.

"Maybe you did want the formulas," I said. "Maybe that's why you stood up at the bar. You smelled them on me before you knew my name."

His face went still.

"Is that what you think?"

"I think you're very good at standing still until someone walks into your hand."

He did not answer.

He took a folded sheet out of his inside pocket, crossed the floor, and held it out.

I did not take it.

"What is that?"

"Page thirty-one," he said. "Section nine. The head of the family may release the Brannigan daughter from the marriage on notice, in writing, with a forfeit of four million dollars to the family trust." He put it in my hand. "I signed it this morning, before the board. My lawyer holds the copy, and he files it the minute you sign."
