Chapter 21: Ten Feet Back
"Sadie," my father said.
He said it loudly, across the tent, in a voice I had never heard him use.
Three hundred people turned to look at a red-faced man in a good suit.
Ezra's hand tightened on mine.
"You don't have to listen," he said, under his breath.
"I know."
I listened.
Martin walked up the aisle, slowly, between the gold chairs.
He stopped in front of the altar, and he did not look at Ezra or at the judge.
He looked at me.
"Two years ago," he said, "a paper came to our kitchen table with your name on it."
The tent was silent.
"Colby told you it was for a lease. It was a transfer. Your mother's formulas, all of them, to the Maddox company, so that a perfume house in Paris could use them. I had already agreed to it. I needed you to sign it so that it would be legal."
A murmur ran through the guests.
"I stood in the next room while you signed. I could hear the pen."
His voice cracked, and he stopped.
I stood still.
I had thought about my father many times in the past week, and I had not once thought about him standing in the next room, listening to a pen.
"I raised my hand to you in the dressing room," he said. "I took your mother's things and kept them in a closet like hostages. I told you she would have wanted this. She would not. I knew exactly what she wanted. She wrote it down for you, and I read it, and I put it back."
He turned to the guests.
"I wanted you all to hear that," he said. "My daughter did not make a bad bargain. I made it for her. She signed because she trusted a man she was told to marry. That's all."
Gerald was on his feet in the second row.
"Martin, you fool, sit down. You're delirious."
