Chapter 7: The Boxes

He caught me in the service corridor behind the ballroom.

I had gone looking for air.

He stood against the far wall with his jacket over one arm.

"You didn't finish your plate," Ezra said.

"I didn't want to eat in front of my father."

"Why not?"

"Because he is going to take everything I own out of my hands the minute I go home."

I had not meant to say it out loud.

It came out anyway, in the plain voice I used when I was too tired to pretend.

"Boxes," he said. "Your mother's things."

I stared at him.

"How do you know that?"

"Gerald keeps a file on every family he does business with," he said. "I read yours on the flight home."

My cheeks went hot.

"They're all I have of her," I said. "Her notebooks. Her bottles. Her handwriting. He keeps them in his study and he says one more mistake from me, and they go out with the trash."

"Then they won't stay in his study."

"You can't just..."

"Can't I?"

He took his phone out and tapped it once.

"Two of my men are waiting at the east door. They'll follow your car. You'll go in, and you'll tell them which boxes."

I should have said no.

A man I had met twelve hours ago was offering to rob my father in front of me.

"What do you want for it?" I asked.

His gaze stayed on me.

"Nothing yet."

That scared me more than a price would have.

Martin Brannigan's house sat on the hill above the harbor, white and square, with a gravel drive.
