Chapter 15: The Board

He stood in my kitchen at seven-thirty and did not know where to put his hands.

I had never seen him without somewhere to be.

I took the coffee cup out of his fingers and set it on the counter.

"Sit," I said.

"I'll stand."

"Then stand still."

I put my palms flat on his chest, over the wrong buttons, and undid them one at a time.

He let me.

His breathing changed with each one, and when I reached the last, he said my name, low.

"I'm not angry at the body," I said. "Only at what's in the head."

"I know."

"Say it, then. The thing you should have said in the stairwell."

His hands came up and settled on my waist.

"I saw her face on that screen at four in the morning," he said. "And I stood next to you in that stairwell in the dark, and I knew whose face it was."

"You knew she was your sister."

"Yes."

"You stood a foot from me and let me hand you my whole week."

"Yes."

"That is what I can't forgive yet," I said. "It's not the room number. It's the foot."

He closed his eyes.

"Tell me what to do."

"Kiss me. Then we'll see."

He kissed me slowly this time, and for a long while that was all it was.

It was his mouth on mine and his thumb along my jaw and the quiet of the penthouse around us.

I felt my anger go soft at the edges and refuse to go away.

I walked him backward down the hall to my bedroom, still kissing him, and pushed the shirt off his shoulders.

Morning light came through the long window and lay across the bed.

I had not slept in that bed with anyone in years.

"You can see everything," he said, rough, looking at the light.

"I want you to."

I stood in front of him and took off my own blouse, then my skirt, then the rest, while he watched me with his hands hanging open at his sides.
