Chapter 15: August

Alexander shut the door on Braden's laugh and turned the lock.

Through the window we watched him stumble down the walk and fold himself into a rideshare.

Neither of us spoke until the taillights were gone.

"Tell me," I said.

"Not at the door."

"Tell me now."

He followed me into the kitchen and stood with his back to the sink, in trousers and nothing else.

"In August I wrote to the management company for the third time," Alexander said. "Nobody answered. So I asked Braden over lunch if he knew who stood behind it."

"Why Braden?"

"He was the firm's best bet to know. His father's business has leased space in this city for thirty years."

"And what did he say?"

"A trust in Delaware. He said he'd handle it, and I thanked him."

I stared at him.

"That's it?"

"That's all of it."

"Then why did he make it sound like a threat?"

"Because he wanted you to wonder." Alexander's jaw tightened. "He wanted you to think I'd gone looking for the owner behind your back."

"Did you?"

"I went looking for a landlord. I didn't know it was you. If I had, I'd have put my hand through the wall before I wrote another letter."

My temper came up all at once.

"You should have told me the day I walked into that storeroom."

"I told you I'd written to them."

"You didn't tell me you'd gone to him."
