Chapter 5: Back at the Front Desk

On Monday I went back to work.

Everyone told me I should take the week. I wanted to sit at the desk where my father had watched me from the bus stop.

The reception desk on six faces the elevators. I'd always thought that was the worst seat in the office.

Now I knew it was the best one. Nobody could come in or go out without passing me.

I hung my cardigan on the chair and logged in.

The phones were already ringing.

"Good morning, this is the firm," I said, and for the first time in three years I said it like I owned the place.

At nine-fifteen Braden came out of the elevator with a coffee for me and a stack of folders for himself.

He did not come alone.

Half the sixth floor had drifted into the lobby to see what would happen. Two paralegals, the office manager, a partner I knew only by his cough.

Braden set the coffee on my desk.

"Everyone," he said, loud enough for the hallway. "I'd like to say something, and then we can all get back to work."

I picked up the coffee and held it.

"Tilda lost her father last week. She's been through something unimaginable, and she's making difficult choices because of it. Nora and I love her, and we're giving her all the space she needs." He put a hand over his heart. "When she's ready, I'll be here."
