Chapter 24: You Dropped This
"One way," I said.
Sam's head came up.
"He's running," the ranger said. "He just doesn't know yet what he's running from."
"Then arrest him now."
"Not yet. He's not getting on that plane, Hannah. I promise you that. But I need four more weeks of quiet."
I looked at the Christmas lights over the street.
Four more weeks of him on morning shows.
"Four weeks," I said.
"Thank you," she said, and hung up.
Sam didn't let go of me the whole walk to the car.
On the Sunday before Christmas we drove to Forks.
Ray had decided Christmas would be early this year.
"Sam's in trial the week of," he'd said on the phone. "And I'm not doing a turkey for one."
Past Port Angeles, past the lake, into Forks.
At the edge of town there was a brown park sign.
HOH RAIN FOREST, with an arrow pointing south into the trees.
Sam glanced at me and didn't say anything.
He moved his hand from the gearshift to my knee and left it there for the next mile.
Ray's house was at the end of a gravel lane, small and white, with a woodpile as long as the house.
