Chapter 22: Larch Street

We reached Larch Street in ten minutes, and Tobias did not obey one speed limit.

Conor stood in the middle of the front lawn under the porch light.

He was still in his torn tuxedo, with the gravy dried stiff on the collar, and a plaster over his eye.

He held a phone up in front of him at arm's length, and the screen was lit.

Nobody was watching.

The counter in the corner said four.

My mother stood at the top of the ramp in her quilted robe, with both hands on her walker.

Three neighbors had come out onto their porches.

The man next door had a hose in his hand and was not using it.

"Darcy," said Conor, when I got out of the car. "Thank God."

"Get off my mother's grass."

"I need to talk to you. Please. Just you, just two minutes."

"You have four viewers."

"They're not here for the viewers!" His voice cracked high. "They fired me, Darcy. The whole company clapped. My mother threw me out. I lost the house, I lost the job, I lost my friends. You're the only person who's ever believed in me."

"I'm not your fiancée."

"You could be."

He went down on one knee on the wet grass.

He had the ring.

He held it up in the porch light, a small, round, shining thing, and it was the first time I saw how small it was.

"I was twenty-three when I gave you this," he said. "Remember? I couldn't afford a bigger stone, and you said it was the most beautiful thing you ever saw. Say it again. Say you love it."

I looked at it.

"I loved it," I said. "I was twenty-one."

"Darcy."

"It's a ring, Conor. It's been in a champagne tower."

Behind me, a car door shut.

Jenna came across the grass in her black dress and flat shoes, with her coat over her arm and her phone in her hand.
