Chapter 10: Type A, Type B

Nerina's POV

Costanza woke at dawn, and Ruggiero put the two papers on her blanket.

I sat on the edge of her bed with my hands in my lap.

I had not been told what was on them. Ruggiero had only knocked at my door at six and said, "Come and hear it with her."

The doctor stood at the foot of the bed with the lab sheet.

"Read it to us," Costanza said.

"Your blood is type B," he said. "Your sister's is type A."

"I know that," I said. "We learned it in school."

"Then you know what happens when a type A heart goes into a type B body."

I did not.

"The body attacks it," he said. "Within a few hours, the heart is dead, and the patient with it. It is the first thing the surgeon checks, and it's the last thing a clinic would miss."

Costanza had gone very still.

"The Albertini clinic's report says you are a perfect match," he said. "It has been altered. Somebody wrote the word match over the real result."

"Papa read that report," Costanza whispered.

"Then your father was lied to as well."

I looked at Ruggiero.

He was standing by the window with his arms folded. He met my eyes and did not look away.

"You got this from the clinic," I said.

"Last night."

"You sent a man to buy my medical file."

"Yes."

"Without telling me."

"Yes."

I stood up.

"You went through my blood while I was asleep in a chair?"

"I wanted to be sure before I let you hope," he said. "If I had been wrong, you would have spent the night believing it, and I could not do that to you. I'm sorry. I would do it again."
