Chapter 14: Zip

Tobin's POV

The zipper went down the length of her spine, and I followed it with my mouth.

Ciara put both palms flat against my front door and made a sound I wanted to hear again.

"Tobin."

"Say it again."

"Tobin, I can't feel my knees."

"Good. Then I'll hold you up."

The blue dress dropped off her shoulders and gathered at her feet.

She stood in my dark hallway in a white slip and nothing else.

I forgot every sensible thing I had ever planned to say.

She was shaking.

I put my forehead against hers and felt it.

"Ciara. Look at me. We can slow down."

"If you slow down, I'll scream."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one I've got."

She took my hand and put it on her breast, over the thin silk.

Her nipple was already hard against my palm.

"I've waited sixty years for this."

I didn't ask what she meant.

I picked her up instead.

She locked her legs around my waist and kissed me the whole way to the bedroom.

She bit my lower lip once, hard, when I knocked her heel against the doorframe.

I laid her on the bed.

I pulled off the rented tie, and she watched me with her mouth open and her hair coming down.

"Shirt," she said.

"Bossy."

"You told a room full of people you'd put me on a flat surface."

"I said the nearest one."

"This is the nearest."

I pulled the shirt over my head, and she looked at my chest and my scars.

She put her hand out and traced the long pink one along my ribs with one finger.

"Welding," I said. "I was sixteen. Don't make it a story."

"I'm going to make it a story."

I got the slip up over her hips and off.

She lay there bare except for her underwear, with freckles down her ribs.

She did not cover herself.

She looked straight at me.

I had to put my hands on the mattress and breathe.
