Chapter 9: A Test

I read Lena's text twice, and I did not answer it.

Brendan had gone home in his own car, with Lena in it, and left me two hours from my own bed.

"You haven't eaten since the bus," Tobin said. "There's a diner two doors down, and my lunch break is forty minutes."

"I have to catch the one o'clock."

"You'll catch it. I'll walk you to the stop."

I should have said no.

I was wearing his jacket, and my bus was in three hours, and the rain had settled in.

"One coffee," I said.

The diner had six booths and a waitress who called him Seymour and brought him a grilled cheese without asking.

I ordered soup.

Tobin ate his sandwich in four large bites and told me he'd grown up in a mill town in Pennsylvania, and that his father was a union welder with opinions about everything.

"He thinks admissions is a kind of paperwork for people who didn't want to build things."

"What do you tell him?"

"That I build people's first day." He wiped his fingers. "He says that's the dumbest thing he's ever heard. He's told every man at his shop."

I laughed into my soup.

"You said you draw," he said. "On receipts."

"That was in my file?"

"The portfolio folder was in your file. It had thirty-one house sketches, and a porch with a ramp built into it, and a staircase that goes around a tree."

I felt my face go warm.

"The one with the porch ramp is for my grandfather. He had a stroke when I was fourteen, and nobody could get his chair up the steps."

"It's good," Tobin said. "Did you get it built?"

"My father built it from the drawing, in a weekend."

"Draw me something."
