Chapter 6: The Lobby

The whole lobby heard him.

A family checking in turned their heads.

An older couple on a wicker sofa lowered their newspapers.

Bryce crossed the white stone floor in four long steps and stopped in front of me, close enough that I could smell sunscreen and last night's rum.

"Are you serious right now?" he said. "Are you actually serious?"

"Hello, Bryce."

"You quit your job on Friday. On Sunday you show up at my client's resort." He laughed and looked around at the people watching, inviting them in. "Do you know how insane this looks?"

Kylie came up behind him in her robe, holding it closed with one hand.

Her other hand slid into his back pocket.

"Oh my God, Amanda," she said softly. "Did you spend your savings on the flight? You didn't have to do that."

"I didn't spend anything."

"Then how did you even get here?"

I didn't answer her.

Bryce rubbed his face with both hands.

"Okay. I get it. You're upset about the wedding. I said we'd do Wednesday. But this?" He pointed at the floor between us. "This is a business trip. This is the biggest deal of my life. You don't get to make it about you."

"I'm not here for you."

He laughed again, louder.

"Right. You flew to the Caribbean on a Sunday for the beach."

Kylie tilted her head and made a sympathetic face.

"The resort's totally booked," she said. "They told us when we checked in. There's a guesthouse in the village, I think. Like, twenty minutes up the hill?"

"I have a room."

"Where?"

"Here."

Bryce's eyes went over my dress and my bag and my sandals.

The linen dress was from a market stall in Santa Fe.

The bag was six years old.
