My Fiancé Wants Me Back Too Bad The Only Thing Coming Back Is Your Regret novel · Chapter 7 of 24

Chapter 7: Thursday

My father opened the door himself and held out both hands to Declan.

"Declan Shaw," Dad said. "Come in, son. Come in out of the cold."

Declan looked at the hands for a moment.

Then he shook the right one, once, and stepped inside.

"Brendan."

"Four years." Dad shook his head slowly. "I'd have known you anywhere. You've lost weight."

"So have you."

"Grief does that." Dad turned and put his arm around my shoulders. "Come on, you two. There's lamb."

I walked into the kitchen where I had done my homework, with the tape under my ribs and Declan's hand a careful inch from the small of my back.

The table was set for three.

My father had put the good plates out, the ones from my mother's wedding, and a candle in the middle.

He served the lamb himself.

He asked Declan about the drive, and the weather, and whether he'd been sleeping.

He said it was good to see him alive.

Every word of it sounded true.

That was the part that scared me.

"I'll tell you what I told Hallie, son," Dad said, passing the potatoes. "I'm not angry. A man does the job he's given. I'd have done the same in your shoes."

"I'm sure you would."

"But you've taken four years from my daughter." My father's voice stayed soft. "Four years she sat by that phone. I won't stand by while that goes on any longer."

"I haven't asked you to."

"Then let me make it easy." Dad slid an envelope from under his napkin and laid it by Declan's plate. "That's five hundred thousand dollars and an airline ticket. You go wherever you like. You never come near my daughter again, and she gets to have a life."
