Chapter 18: The Microphone

Bradford reached for the microphone, and Heidi stepped back out of his reach.

"Don't touch me," she said.

The speakers carried every word to the back of the ballroom.

"My son was born two weeks ago," she said. "A man signed his birth form as the father. That man is Dean Mercer, and he is not the father."

A gasp went across the room.

Dean stood by the pillar with his hands over his face.

"I let everyone believe it was Dean," Heidi said. "I let Bethany Ames believe I was her friend. I took her house, her money and her trust for two years. I'm saying it first so nobody can say I didn't."

Her voice broke, and she went on.

"The father of this baby is Bradford Auchincloss."

Nobody spoke.

I heard a fork land on a plate somewhere in the room.

Then four hundred phones lifted at once.

Bradford laughed, and it was a terrible sound over the speakers.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I am so sorry for this," he said. "This poor young woman is unwell. She has been under a great deal of strain."

"I'm not unwell," Heidi said.

"Heidi, dear."

"I'm not your dear. Not anymore."

She turned her back on him and faced the crowd.

With one hand she took the white knit cap off her baby's head.

The chandelier lit his small skull, and on top, at the crown, stood a thick tuft of white hair.

She turned the baby slowly, so the whole ballroom could see it.

Then she stepped to Bradford's side and stood next to him, and she did not say a word.

She did not need one.

Bradford's hair was white and brushed back from his tan forehead.

The baby's tuft was white at the crown, in the same place and the same shade.
