Chapter 20: The Complaint

"That's him," Bradford said.

He had found his voice again, and it rang across the ballroom.

"Officer, that man took confidential papers out of Auchincloss Maritime's boardroom yesterday. He passed them to a director behind the company's back. My lawyers filed the complaint this afternoon."

The officer turned to Derrick.

"Mr. Carrigan, is that true?"

"I took three pages and gave them to a director," Derrick said.

"Did you have permission?"

Derrick did not look at me, and he did not look at my mother.

"No, sir."

"Then I need you to come with me."

The second officer put a hand on his arm.

I stepped in front of it.

"You will take your hand off him," I said.

"Ma'am, step back."

"I said no."

"Bethany," Derrick said quietly. "It's all right."

It was not all right.

I saw Bradford watching from the foot of the stage, with the smile of a man holding the last card.

"He gave you Bradford's own signature," I said. "He did it because I told him to."

"You did not," Derrick said.

"I'm saying I did."

"He did it on my authority," my mother said.

She had not raised her voice.

She walked up to the officer with her chin level and her hands folded on her bag.

"I am the head of the Auchincloss family office, Officer. Mr. Carrigan works for me. I have authorized every page he has touched in three years, whether he told me about it or not."

"Honor," Bradford said, "you cannot sign off afterward. The law doesn't work that way."

"It does when the one who gave the order is me," my mother said. "And I own the building."

She turned to the huge white screen behind the stage, the one the Foundation used for the regatta slides.
