Chapter 23: Where Heidi Goes

I did not step back from the door, and I did not open it wider.

"You can't come in," I said.

Heidi nodded.

"I know. I only didn't know where else to knock."

"How did you get here?"

"A cab. I paid with the last cash in my bag." Her mouth shook. "They put me in a room at the club, and then the attorney general's people wanted me out of the building. Honor's driver told me to go to a hotel. I couldn't."

"Why not?"

"Because I'd have had to pay for it with a card, and I don't have one that works."

Derrick appeared behind me with a blanket from the hall chest.

He did not say anything.

He went down the step and put it around the baby, who stirred and made a small cross sound.

I watched Derrick's big hands tuck the corner under that small white head.

Heidi saw me watching.

"He's cold," she said. "I'm sorry. He's cold, and he's hungry, and I don't have a bottle."

Derrick looked at me.

I went to the kitchen and got the bottle out of the sink, and I washed it, and filled it with the formula that had been left in the pantry.

I carried it back to the step and held it out.

"Feed him there," I said, "on the bench."

She sat on the stone bench by the garden bed with the baby in her lap.

The sun was coming up pink on the wall behind her.

The baby took the bottle greedily, and Heidi cried without any sound.

I stood on the step above her with my arms crossed.

"Listen to me," I said. "I'm going to say this once."

"Yes."

"The baby is the only person in this story who did nothing wrong. He will not go without. My mother's lawyers are already filing to put part of Bradford's seized money in a trust for him, and you will not touch the principal."
