Chapter 14: The Eight Thousand

Emmett's POV

On Friday night I let her knock and I did not open the door.

I stood behind the roll-up with my hand on the lock and listened to her breathe in the alley.

She had written that she was getting one point five million dollars, and that she would have her family's building back.

I looked down at the words.

I thought: now she can have everything she had before me.

A man with a camera and a rented studio is the one piece of this month she'll want to forget.

By Saturday noon she had texted me nearly a dozen times.

The last one said: Open the door or I'm buying a ladder.

She came at one with a ladder.

I opened the door.

I won't repeat what she said, because I'd like to keep it.

I'll say only that I have never been so completely wrong about anything.

On Monday morning I was in the studio at seven, cleaning lenses, and I was a happy man.

At nine a lawyer rang the buzzer.

He was fifty or so, tanned, in a dark suit, with a slim leather case.
