Chapter 22: What She Said

I looked down at his hand on my wrist.

Then I looked up at him, and I took my wrist back, one finger at a time.

"She isn't lying," I said.

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to; the hall was a glass box and every word of it rang.

"I watched you sign. I'd have watched you sign it a hundred times. You told me you were divorced, and you showed me a paper that your assistant made on a Sunday."

Hugh's face went slack.

"Your mother told me that last night, in my bedroom, while she pinned this veil to my head. I have it on a recording."

A sound went through the hall, low and long.

Hugh's mother lifted her head and looked at me for the first time.

"You called my father's shop the little shop," I said, to Hugh. "You told my mother the lease was ending. You told me I was pretty when I was frightened."

"Elise."

"I wasn't frightened. I was planning."

The woman detective took his left arm, and the man took his right.

The cuffs clicked in the silence. It was a small, plain sound.
