Chapter 23: The Half

Odessa came in with the gray-haired lawyer behind her and a single sheet of paper.

She looked at the two of us on the carpet, at my dress and Emmett's camera.

"Don't get up," she said. "This takes a minute."

The lawyer set the page on the sofa arm and held out a pen.

It was the witness statement, one paragraph long.

I read it twice, and I signed Elise Marchetti, and the lawyer signed under me.

"That's all?" I said.

"That's all. The rest is lawyers being paid to be slow."

Odessa took the pen back from him, capped it, and put it in her handbag.

"Thank you, Elise."

"Is that what you came to say?"

"No." She looked at the floor, and then at me. "I came to say that I was wrong about one thing."

"Which?"

"I said I would pay for the dress. I'd like to pay for a different dress. In a different year."

She left before I could answer.

The settlement took four weeks.

Hugh's lawyers fought for two weeks and lost.

They had a signature in front of a hundred and forty guests and a notary's stamp.
