Chapter 14: Five Years Ago
Bridget picked Rupert's phone up by one corner and put it in the freezer beside the peas.
"She can still see it," Rupert said.
"She can see peas," Bridget said, and shut the door.
The doorbell rang again.
This time I got there first, and it was Willem with a paper bag in his hand.
"You said noon," he said. "I wanted to know what time to drive you to the airport. I brought crackers for the plane."
"And a banana?"
"And a banana."
I stepped out onto the porch and pulled the door almost closed behind me.
"Willem, I should have told you something this morning."
"All right."
"Lydia came to the Fund. I took her across the street and recorded everything she said."
He waited.
"She offered me two hundred thousand dollars to disappear. Then she told me the Ingleby money is Tarrant money, and the prenup was written so I could never leave."
Willem set the bag on the porch rail.
"You've had that all day."
"I was going to tell you."
"When?"
"After I knew what to do with it."
"Because I'd tell you what to do with it."
"Because you'd have bought a plane ticket."
He laughed once, in spite of himself.
"I'd have bought two."
He took my hand and held it between both of his, because it was cold.
His thumb moved over my knuckles, slowly, and I let it.
I stood on my aunt's porch in October and noticed that my hand did not want to be given back.
Behind me, the door swung open.
"Mr. Kitson," Rupert said.
Willem's hands let go of mine.
He looked past me at the man in the doorway with the wet shoes, and his face went flat.
"Thank you for lunch," Rupert said. "I'll pay you back."
"You can't," Willem said. "That's the trouble."
"Willem," I said.
