Chapter 15: Poppy's Appointment

The clinic was on the top floor of a glass tower in Green Hills, with a fountain in the lobby and a receptionist who smiled before she looked at my name.

Then she looked at it, and the smile stayed exactly where it was.

"Ms. Clitheroe isn't on Poppy's list."

"No," said Poppy's grandmother, beside me in her gray wool coat. "She wouldn't be."

She opened her handbag and laid a sheet of paper on the counter.

Rupert had written it on Bridget's grocery pad, under a printed picture of a tomato.

It said that Claire Clitheroe could attend all of his daughter's medical visits, receive her records and give her medication, and it was signed Rupert Ingleby, Poppy's father.

The receptionist read it twice.

"I'll have to ask the office manager."

"Ask whoever you like," Poppy's grandmother said. "We'll sit."

We sat in the waiting room under a painting of a sailboat.

My bag held a banana that Willem had put in it that morning without telling me.

I ate it, and a woman across the room smiled at me.

My phone buzzed with a text from him.

"Eat something. Not juice."

I read it three times, and I did not write back, because Poppy's grandmother was watching me with great interest.

The elevator opened, and Poppy came out of it at a run.

"Claire!"

She hit my knees, and I held on to her with both arms and a good deal of stomach in the way.

"Hi, bug."

"You're really here. You didn't say."

"I'm here."

Lydia came out behind her in the camel coat, her bag over one arm and her smile ready.
