Chapter 16: Wait

On Friday morning I sat across from Willem's desk with the door open and the whole ninth floor visible through the glass.

His assistant was ten feet away, typing.

Two program officers were arguing about a spreadsheet outside the window.

I had a printout in front of me, and I put my finger on the last line.

"I'm sending Lydia's lawyer the recording today," I said. "With a letter. Poppy's records go back to the hospital, my name goes on her school form, and the trespass notice is withdrawn."

"All right."

"If she says no, it goes to the board of Tarrant Holdings on Monday."

"All right," Willem said again, and wrote something on his pad.

"There's one more item."

"I'm listening."

I kept my voice level and my face exactly the same as it had been for the budget.

"Tonight, after Bridget goes to bed, I want you in my room with the door shut. I want your mouth on me before you say anything at all."

His pen stopped.

"I'm telling you now," I said, "so you can think about it through the afternoon."

Willem did not look at the assistant, and he did not look at me.

A muscle moved in his jaw.

His ears went red, and when he stood up to close the blinds, he did it with the folder held in front of him.

"Understood," he said, and his voice had dropped half an octave.

I told myself the room was warm.

I did not tell myself the other thing, which was that I had thought about his hands in the car at the clinic, and in the cardiologist's waiting room, and on my aunt's porch with my own hand wrapped in them.
