Chapter 21: Jo's POV: The Speech

Jo's POV

She had picked the best seat in the waiting room.

It was the corner chair under the television.

From there she could see the whole room, and the whole room could see her.

Megan sat in it with her ankles crossed and a paper cup in both hands.

She looked like a friend waiting for someone to be discharged.

A man across from her was holding a bag of frozen peas against his eye.

She smiled at him when he looked.

I walked out through the double doors in my scrubs with my lanyard flipped over.

The security guard at the desk saw my face, got up and stood a little closer.

"Jo," Megan said warmly. "I brought you a latte. I didn't know how you take it."

"I don't take it from you."

"That's fine." She put the cup on the floor by her foot. "Is there somewhere we can talk?"

"Here is fine."

"It's private."

"Then say it quietly."

Her smile stayed where it was, but something in her eyes sharpened.

She had not expected me to be easy.

She had expected me to be tired.

"Shane's father hung up on me this morning," she said.

"You hung up on him."

"He was very rude."

"He asked if you wanted to tell your version. You didn't."

Megan looked at the man with the peas, who had stopped pretending not to listen.

She lowered her voice to a murmur, sweet and level.

"I looked you up, Jo. State board of nursing. License number, and your hospital, and your year."

I said nothing.

"Do you know what a nurse is supposed to do when she finds a hurt person in the street at three in the morning?"

"Drive him to the hospital."

"Or report it. You didn't do either."
