Chapter 6: The Cutting Room
"No," my father said. "Not at a supper table, and not at your word."
He did not shout.
He turned to the pack elder, who sat at the end of the high table with her counting staff across her knees.
"Tell him the law," he said.
The elder cleared her throat.
"A gown is counted at the bonding circle, and only there," she said. "Unless a complaint is lodged with the Moon Council and the Council orders a count."
"Then I'll lodge one," said Jasper.
"A complaint against whom?"
"Against whoever kept what Ironwood sent to Snow Moon for twenty-two years."
Nobody at the high table moved.
My father smiled.
"You are a guest at my table, Coyle. You will not accuse my family of theft in front of my pack."
"Then let the Council clerk write it down," Jasper said. "He's sitting right there."
The Council clerk was a thin man at the guest table with a ledger already open.
He looked at my father and then at Jasper, and he reached for his pen.
"Alpha Coyle's complaint is noted," he said. "The Council will hear it at Winter Moon, three days from now."
"This is a family matter!" my mother said sharply.
It was the first time I had heard her raise her voice in my life.
"Sit, Lorna," said my father.
She sat.
Margot laughed, a light, easy laugh that carried to the back tables.
"Let them count me, Dad. I have nothing to hide."
"Nobody is counting anyone," said Gordon, and then he looked at Jasper, and the kindness was gone again. "Get him out of my hall."
