Chapter 16: The Guesthouse
Jack's POV
I caught Lydia's taillights on the highway at one in the morning and stayed two cars behind her all the way to Rhode Island.
Iris's text had reached me at the Connecticut line.
Hargrove's lawyers had filed a second motion at midnight, and it named Eleanor.
Iris was going to the penthouse to sit beside her grandmother, and I was going to bring her something to throw back.
Lydia drove like a woman who had decided not to think.
At the Newport gate she turned off her headlights and coasted.
A man in a dark jacket stood in the guardhouse with a thermos.
Lydia rolled down her window and said something I couldn't hear, and he waved her through.
I parked on the service road, jumped the stone wall and went across the wet lawn on foot.
The big house was dark except for one lamp in the study.
The guesthouse sat at the bottom of the garden, and a light was on there too.
I watched Lydia let herself in through the side door of the main house with a key she was not supposed to have.
She was inside for eleven minutes.
I stood under a hedge and counted every one.
Then a car came up the drive with its lights off.
It was a black sedan, and the man from the guardhouse was running toward it.
I did not wait for the door to open.
I went through the side door and found Lydia in the study on her knees in front of the wall, with the barometer on the floor beside her and a steel panel swung open.
She had a small black drive in her fist.
"Time," I said.
"Almost."
"Now."
"There's a second one." She pulled out a leather folder. "Look."
