Chapter 22: The Long Table

The planes had been gone an hour.

Rolf had carried Devon's bags down to the ice himself and set them at his feet.

Now the big room was empty, and the plates sat unwashed on the long table.

I stood in the middle of the floor in my wedding dress.

Four men stood around me.

None of them had said a word since the engines faded.

"Buttons," I said. "Forty. Ten each."

Hank stepped behind me first.

He laid his huge hand on the nape of my neck and undid the top button, and the next, and the next.

He kissed the skin between my shoulder blades after every one.

By the tenth, the dress had loosened across my shoulders, and I was shaking.

"Beck," Hank said, hoarsely.

Beck took his place.

His fingers were dry and exact, and he undid his ten with a steady count.

At every fifth button he stopped and set his lips against my spine.

"One thirty," he said. "That's going up."

"Rolf," Hank said.

Rolf took the next ten, and he counted them out loud, because he could not help it.

"Twenty-one. Twenty-two. Twenty-three. Captain, these are tiny, I have the hands of a bear, I'm sorry."

"Rolf," I said.

"Twenty-four. Yes. Quiet."

He bent and bit my hip through the satin on twenty-nine.

Jesse knelt for the last ten.

He undid them from the bottom, slowly, laughing under his breath.

The dress hung open down my back to the base of my spine.

He kissed my tailbone, and the dress slid off my shoulders and caught at my waist.

I stood bare to the hips in the white skirt, with the four of them behind me.

The windows along the lake wall had gone black with the early dark.

In the glass I saw the whole room, lit gold by the stove, and a woman in a wedding dress with her breasts bare.

Four big men stood at her back.

It was the first time in my life I knew the woman in the glass.

"Look," I said. "All of you."

Their eyes met mine in the window.

"Mine," I said.

"Yours," said Hank.

"Yours," said Beck, and Rolf, and Jesse, one after the other.
