Chapter 7: First Ice
Kit's POV
On Thursday morning the lake made a sound I had never heard in four summers.
I stood at the end of the dock in my coat at dawn, with a mug in both hands, and listened to the cove ticking.
A skin of ice had closed over the water in the night.
It was thin and clear and gray, and it ran from the shore to the middle of the lake.
It creaked each time the wind pushed on it.
No plane could land on that, and no boat could cross it.
The only open water was a black stripe at the far side, getting narrower while I watched.
"Told you," said Rolf behind me, in a parka, with his cap pulled low. "Nothing's flying till December."
"I know."
"You're not scared?" Rolf asked.
"No."
He looked at me for a while.
"You're a hell of a woman, Captain," he said, and went up the dock to start the generator.
I spent the day in the kitchen with Jesse, breaking down a case of frozen salmon.
Neither of us said a word about the pantry.
