Chapter 11: The Silver Pen
Brynn's POV
On Monday morning at 8:55, I walked into the boardroom wearing my father's gray suit jacket over a black dress.
It was too big in the shoulders.
Brice had kept it in his closet since the funeral, and he'd handed it to me without a word.
The room was on the fortieth floor, with windows on three sides and a table long enough to seat twenty.
My father's chair stood empty at the far end, and nobody had sat in it for fourteen months.
Seven directors were seated already. Preston sat beside them in a navy suit with the woman in gray at his elbow.
My mother sat at the head of the table with her hands folded.
She smiled at me, and for one second I almost smiled back.
Then I looked at the pen beside her right hand.
It was silver, with a thin blue ring, and I had seen her sign my report cards with it.
"Brynn," the lead director said. "Thank you for coming. Mr. Kincade is welcome to sit in the gallery as your guest."
"Objection," said the woman in gray. "He is not a shareholder."
"He's my guest," I said.
"Overruled," said the lead director. He sounded relieved to say it.
Brice took a chair against the back wall.
The big man in the gray coat was already in the next chair over.
He nodded to me politely, with a thick folder on his knee.
Preston's head turned. His face lost its color by degrees.
"Who is that?" he said under his breath, to the woman in gray.
"I'm told he's an observer," she said.
The lead director cleared his throat.
"We have one item before the board this morning. Miss Wentworth, you have a notice of revocation on file, and Mr. Aldridge holds a spousal proxy dated last Saturday. Please speak."
