Chapter 8: Say It Again

The man in the gray coat bought us coffee in the lobby café, because he said bad news should be delivered sitting down.

"Eleven million," he said. "He borrowed it over two years, in three pieces. Each time he said the same thing. A family inheritance was coming, and he'd marry into the rest."

"He told you my name."

"He told me a lot of things." He turned his cup on the saucer. "I'm not a violent man, Miss Wentworth. My employer is not a patient one."

"What is the deadline?"

"Tuesday noon."

"Preston doesn't have it," I said.

"No. But he said he'd have it Monday, after a board meeting." He studied me. "I'd like to be in that room."

Brice's chair creaked. "It's a private meeting."

"Is it?" the man asked me.

I thought about seven faces at a long table, and a woman in gray, and a man with a folded proxy.

"I have an invitation to send," I said. "Come at nine, and sit in the gallery."

He smiled for the first time. "I'll bring the paperwork."

Then he said, as an afterthought, "By the way, the first two installments weren't paid by Mr. Aldridge. A cashier's check came in. No name."

"Who paid it?"

"I never asked, Miss Wentworth. Money doesn't have a face." He rose and buttoned his coat. "Somebody wanted him to stay alive long enough to marry you."
