Chapter 18: Two Million Dollars
Nobody spoke.
Behind Alvin the fiddles went into a reel, and a crowd laughed somewhere over the pens.
Jude put himself between me and the door without seeming to move.
"Dad," he said.
"Go and get your wife a lemonade, son."
"No," Jude said.
"I'd like a word with Bryn."
"Say it in front of me."
Alvin looked at his younger son for a long time.
He didn't look angry.
He looked patient.
"It's all right," I said.
"Bryn."
"Go on. I can handle your father," I said.
"I'm not leaving you with him."
"You're not leaving me. You're standing by the fence. If I whistle, you can come." I touched his arm. "Please."
He looked at me.
Then he stepped past his father without a word, and walked to the fence thirty feet off.
He turned his back, but I knew he heard everything.
Alvin put his hat on.
"Walk with me," he said.
We went out into the dusty light of the lot.
The sky was black, thick with stars.
He stopped beside his truck, a polished white pickup with a campaign sticker on the bumper.
"I'm going to be plain, because you prefer it," Alvin said. "I'd like to make you a better offer than the last one."
"I don't want an offer."
