The headline ran across the top of the front page in black capitals.
STEHLING BRIDE SIGNED DIVORCE PAPERS WEEKS AFTER WEDDING, DOCUMENTS SHOW.
Under it was a photograph of a page I knew.
My own signature, small and square, on the line above the typed words PETITIONER'S CONSENT.
The page was dated nowhere.
The story ran three columns.
It said a source close to the campaign had provided the filing, that the marriage of the senator's younger son was "understood to be a temporary arrangement," and that voters might wonder what else was staged.
It quoted a political scientist from Austin.
It did not quote me.
I read it standing in the kitchen, with Jude at my shoulder.
He had come down in his jeans, barefoot, with his hair on end, and read it over my arm.
He was quiet for so long that I turned around.
His face had no color left.
"He did this," I said.
"Yes."
"He's turned my own signature on me. Six weeks before the church."
"It's to scare you into the two million," Jude said. "Or to make you look like the one who's leaving."
