Chapter 29: The Clinic Sign
The new sign went up over the clinic door on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
It was green with white letters and a small painted horse head.
ROANE LARGE ANIMAL CLINIC, it said.
Nothing else.
Jude stood in the gravel lot holding the ladder, with his hat pushed back, and looked up at it with the face of a man who had asked for something different and been talked out of it.
"Stehling and Roane," he'd said, on Tuesday, in bed.
"No."
"Roane and Stehling," he said.
"Jude."
"It's good for business."
"It's good for a politician's business," I'd said. "I've got a name. It was on that door before you were old enough to find the ranch."
He had grinned and rolled onto his back.
"Fine. I give up. I lost."
"You lost very gracefully," I said.
"I'm a gracious man."
On the sidewalk, my mother and Oma stood eight feet apart.
They had met for the first time that morning, properly, and neither had stopped talking since.
"Thanksgiving is at my house," Oma said. "The whole family. I have the china."
