"I did," I said.
"When?"
"The morning after the dinner. After Umma put us in one room." I touched the edge of the paper. "He'd been out on the dock half the night. He came in after three and fell asleep like that."
My father looked at the drawing for a long time.
Eli's arm across his face.
The folded jeans on my desk chair in the corner.
The stripe of window light across the comforter.
"He said no in four seconds," my father said.
I didn't say anything.
"I offered that boy five thousand dollars. I've never offered anyone five thousand dollars for anything." He set the drawing down very carefully. "He said I should look at your drawings before I decided what you were."
"He said that?"
"Then he hung up on me. Nobody hangs up on me." My father put his reading glasses back on. "I went up to your room last night and looked at the walls. Every one of them. Your mother never took them down."
He picked up the drawing of my mother's hands on the velvet box.
