Chapter 16: Porters

"Steal them how?" Shane said. "They're not luggage."

"No," I said. "They're people who carry luggage. I know exactly where they sleep."

The porters' camp was under the Skyway, outside the south gate, where the highway made a concrete roof.

The wall didn't let porters sleep inside.

There were sixty-some cots under there, and cook fires in oil drums, and laundry hung on the guardrail.

I walked in at four that afternoon with Marta and Shane behind me.

Men looked up from the fires.

The old porter with the gray beard was sitting on a cot with his ankle wrapped in a rag.

He stood up when he saw me, and so did the man I'd carried over my shoulder.

"It's him," somebody said.

In a minute every porter in the camp was standing in a loose ring around us.

They were the men I'd spent twelve years beside.

I knew which ones snored and which ones prayed, and which one kept a picture of a dog in his boot.

None of them knew me.

"I'm Danny Hudak," I said. "I've got a church on Peckham Street with a stove, a cellar full of potatoes and a roof that doesn't leak much. I need people who can carry. Nobody there goes out first with a sack of bones on his back."
