Chapter 17: What the Wall Takes

"Everybody inside!" I yelled. "Get inside the church!"

The first crawler came over the back wall of the yard before I'd finished saying it.

Then six more came over behind it, gray and low, going for the sacks.

Porters came out of the rectory half asleep, and they did what porters do.

They grabbed whoever was nearest and carried them.

I went into the middle of the yard and started picking people up.

I carried the old man with the cane in one arm and the boy with the healed leg in the other.

I set them inside the church door and went back.

Up in the bell tower, Marta's rifle started firing, and then Shane's beside it.

Crawlers dropped among the bone sacks, but more kept coming over the wall.

There had never been this many on Peckham Street.

Ray had brought them here with the trick the Director used every morning.

He'd thrown the bait over the back wall while my best men stood at the front gate, waiting for dawn.

Lou came out of the rectory kitchen in his undershirt with a frying pan.
