Chapter 21: The Second Night

By four in the afternoon the snow was up to my knees, and the light was going.

Ray had kept his word about the gates.

All day the city came in through every gate in the wall, with sleds and shopping carts and kids on shoulders.

The church came in at noon in a line behind Lou's truck.

The porters carried the old man and his cane, and every pew cushion we owned.

The porters went straight up onto the wall, because that was Ray's term.

So did Marta and Shane.

I walked Marta to the bottom of the wall stairs.

"The Broadway Market people come last," I said. "They wait too long, and then they come down William Street all at once, right at dark. Last time most of them didn't make it."

"Then send somebody now."

"I already did."

That morning, before Ray's terms started at dark, I'd sent the big porter and twenty men to the Market with sleds.

At three they'd come in through the east gate pulling the butter lamb lady and a dozen old people on sleds.
