"Sorry, Danny," Ray said. "Somebody's got to hold the door."

"I know," I said. "I'm holding it."

He shoved.

The last time, I'd had a crate of shells in my arms and nothing under my feet but a slope of wet dirt.

This time I had a steel door on my back.

I'd set my right boot against the crack the door had made in the ramp.

It was the way you brace on a stair when a dresser is coming down at you.

His hand pushed against my chest, and I didn't move.

He set his feet and shoved again with his whole body.

It was like shoving a wall.

The right-hand man hauled on my left arm with both hands, and my arm stayed exactly where it was, holding up the bottom edge of the door.

Ray stepped back and stared at me.

For the first time since ninth grade, he didn't know what to say.

"Step out, Danny," he said finally. "Step out and let it drop. It's over."

At the bottom of the ramp, the old woman with the cane was still coming through the snow.

Behind her, the man with the broken leg was hopping on his son's shoulder.
