Nobody on the wall knew yet.

Only I'd heard the voice, and only I could feel the sentence waiting in my mouth.

The crawlers came at the wall all night, and the hunters held it.

Marta and Shane shot until their rifles were too hot to touch.

Ray lay on a cot in the square with his legs bandaged, and nobody brought him anything but the bandages.

Around four in the morning, Rosie fell asleep on the wall walk over the east gate.

I took off my coat and put it under her, and she curled up on it with her cheek on the sleeve.

Marta sat down on my other side with her rifle across her knees.

"It's gold," she said, looking at my hand. "Everybody's saying it. A porter made Gold."

"Yeah."

"You get one request."

"Yeah."

She didn't ask me what I'd ask for, because she knew.

"You could bring Lou back," she said quietly. "One sentence. You could do that."

I'd thought about it for an hour.
