In April I woke up to the smoke alarm.
"Daddy! The waffles are on fire. A little."
I lay there in my own bed in our upstairs flat in Kaisertown and listened to it go off.
Then I listened to Marta in the kitchen, laughing and swearing at the same time.
The window went up, and a waffle went out of it.
When I came out, the alarm had quit.
Rosie was at the table behind her sign, in her green sweater, with marker on her fingers.
The sign said HUDAK DRAWING COMPANY, and under it, in smaller letters, DENTAL PLAN AVAILABLE.
The girl with the purple glasses sat across from her, behind a sign that said HORSES 20 CENTS.
The boy with the notebook sat at the end, writing down what everybody ate.
"That's two burned," he said. "Same as Tuesday."
Marta stood at the stove in my old flannel shirt, with her braid down her back and a spatula in her hand.
She'd moved in at Christmas, with the two kids nobody had come for.
Their parents' names were still on her sign-out sheet, in the church, with no time written beside them.
She'd gone to the county's new office in January and signed her name under theirs.
