Chapter 10: Her House
He came to my door at eight on Tuesday night with nothing in his hands.
Not a jacket, not a bag, not his phone.
His gray Tacoma sat at my curb with the cracked windshield catching the streetlight.
Rudy stood on the welcome mat in a clean black T-shirt and jeans, with his hands hanging open at his sides.
"I said bring nothing," I said.
"I brought nothing."
"You didn't even bring flowers," I said.
"You said nothing," he said.
I laughed.
I stood back and he walked in.
He stopped in the middle of my living room and looked around.
He saw the beige couch, the shelf of cookbooks, the lamp I'd picked for the corner.
It was a plain house.
It had been the house of a woman who was engaged, and then of a woman who wasn't.
"It's nice," he said.
"Don't look at the walls."
"Whose floor is this?" he said.
I stared at him.
He kept a perfectly straight face for as long as it took me to understand it, and then the corner of his mouth moved.
"You said nothing off the gym floor," he said. "So I'm asking."
"Mine," I said. "All of it."
"Yes, ma'am."
I took him by the wrist and led him down the hall.
The bedroom was at the back, with a window onto the pool, which glowed dark blue under the mesquite.
I had changed the sheets that afternoon, white and crisp, and left one lamp on low.
On the bed I had laid out three things.
One was a long silk scarf the color of wine, and one was a black eye mask from a trip I took once.
The third was a small silver ring from the back of my nightstand drawer, which I had bought online at one in the morning and never opened.
