Chapter 11: The Complaint
I woke before the alarm with a man's arm across my waist and the pool light gone gray in the window.
Rudy slept like he trained, flat on his back with one fist beside his head.
I lay there and looked at the ceiling fan.
I could have woken him.
I got up instead, and made coffee in my own kitchen with my own mug, and brought him one, and put it on the nightstand.
He opened his eyes and looked at the cup and at me in my robe.
"Ms. Ruelas," he said, hoarse.
"It's four-thirty," I said. "You're opening at five. Drink it."
He sat up and drank it with both hands, and watched me over the rim.
That was Wednesday.
On the following Tuesday I came in for the six o'clock session.
The owner was standing by the front desk with her whistle on its lanyard.
She did not blow it.
She was sixty, white, with short silver hair and a face that had been squinting at gym floors since before I was born.
"Villalobos," she said. "My office."
Rudy put down the weights he was carrying.
"Now," she said.
He went in with her.
The owner's office had a glass wall onto the break room, with a steel door and a blind that she never drew.
