Chapter 14: Count Me In

Rudy's POV

I got to the lot at ten after five, thirty-five minutes before I unlock, and I sat in the Tacoma with the engine off.

I do that every Tuesday.

It is the only time of the week nobody expects anything from me.

The lot lights buzzed.

The gym was a dark box with a red exit sign over the side door.

I had the black notebook open on my knee, and I was not writing in it.

She had left it on the bench on Thursday, and I had put it back in my bag and had not touched a pen since.

I had told her I would not count her in again.

I meant it, and I did not know yet what a man does with a notebook he has promised to stop.

The windshield had the same crack it has always had, a long white line from the passenger corner up to the mirror.

I looked at it, because looking at it is easier than looking at the dashboard clock.

It said 5:12.

Three years ago, in the training room at ASU, a man in a red windbreaker looked at an MRI on a laptop and then at my knee.

It was my position coach.

He had been shouting at me for three seasons, and he did not shout.

"Well," he said. "We're counting you out."

That was all.

Four guys were taping ankles at the other table, and they all went quiet.

Nobody looked at me.

The ice machine dropped a load of cubes into its bin, and I remember that sound better than his face.

I walked out on my own, with a leg that would not take weight, and I never went back to that room.

Since then I have counted for everybody else.

I count a mother's squats and a retired cop's deadlifts, and a woman's bench press in a dark gym at six in the morning, and I write them down.
