Chapter 22: Tell Me When

Marisol's POV

The gym at ten on a Friday night was empty and dark.

He had let me in at the side door with his fob.

He had turned off every light but the strip over the mirrored wall by the squat rack.

The rest of the room was black glass and black rubber and the faint red of the exit sign.

The mirror ran twelve feet along the wall, floor to ceiling.

The power rack stood in front of it with the bar set at the height of my shoulders.

I had been looking at that bar since October.

I had kept him a whole night after the race, and I was not finished with him.

"Villalobos."

"Ms. Ruelas," he said.

"Hands."

He held them out in front of him, palms up, and I looked at his wrists.

I had brought the black lifting straps from my bag, the long cotton ones from the rack in March.

I wound one around his left wrist and then his right, behind his back.

I crossed them and tied them off in the knot I had learned at fourteen.

I tested it.

"Can you touch me?" I said.

"No."

"Do you want to?"

"I want to more than I want to breathe," Rudy said, plainly.

I laughed.

I pulled my T-shirt over my head, and then my shorts, and stood in front of the mirror in the strip of white light.

I looked at the woman in it.

She was strong and soft and flushed from the neck up, with her ponytail pulled tight and a pale scar on her chin.
